3 Types of Intuition: Definitions and Examples
Intuition isn’t one-size-fits-all. Researchers recognize different types of intuition based on how information is processed internally. Here’s a simple breakdown of the three main types:
Holistic Intuition
This type of intuition refers to the ability to make decisions by integrating diverse pieces of information into a complete, often unspoken understanding. Instead of processing facts one by one and analyzing each detail separately, you “just know” based on the bigger picture. For example, guided by holistic intuition, a manager may feel that a project is going to fail even though all reports say otherwise. They pick up on many small signals — slight tension in the team, delays, changes in customer behaviour — and integrate them into a general feeling of anxiety, even though there are no formal signs of failure yet.
Inferential Intuition
This intuition develops over time through experience. It’s based on rapid, automatic reasoning where learned analytical processes become second nature. For example, after many years of practice, some doctors can “feel” a patient’s diagnosis based only on a combination of mild symptoms: skin tone, temperature, facial expression, etc. Formally, the doctor makes a conclusion based on hundreds of past observations, but the process happens almost automatically, without conscious analysis.
Affective Intuition
This type of intuition is driven by emotions. Your gut feeling about a situation often emerges because your emotional brain picks up on subtle cues that your conscious mind has not yet had time to process. Affective Intuition can, for example, make a buyer cancel a deal at the last moment, even if all the terms of the purchase are favourable. The person may have doubts or get “wrong vibes” — and walk away, trusting their emotions.
By understanding these types, you can better appreciate the complex ways intuition influences decisions in both your personal and professional life.
